Most of the major cities of Australia are located on the southern part of the continent, which experiences a temperate climate. Being on the southern hemisphere, these cities get a climate that is the direct opposite to those in Europe and North America. The winter months are quite wet and cloudy, particularly in Victoria and Tasmania.

A good time to visit the southern part of Australia is in summer. This is however a peak traveling season, so expect prices to be higher, and be sure you book your accommodation well in advance. Spring is also an excellent time to visit, and in places such as South Australia and Western Australia, you can see the wildflowers in bloom, between September and December.
If you are coming to enjoy winter sports, then of course, you need to come in winter. The sky slopes in Victoria are open between June and September.
The northern part of Australia lies in the tropical zone. Here, the climate can be divided into the dry season and the wet season. The dry season will be a more comfortable time to visit. This runs from May to October. The wet season, on the other hand, is not only wet, but also hot and humid, with many places flooded. So I wouldn't recommend going to the northern parts of Australia during that time.
As Australia is such a vast country, the answer for a question on when is best to visit it willl depend on where in the country you are going.
