More on SouthportSouthport was established in the late 19th century as a timber port. It was named in reference to its geographic location to the south of Brisbane. During that time, the forest was being cleared and timber mills were established in the area. Ships transport logs from here to Brisbane.
By the beginning of the 20th century, Southport was evolving away from its industrial origins to embrace tourism as the new mainstay of its economy. This was facilitated by the construction of tourist infrastructure, such as accommodation, ferry and buggy service. The ferry was replaced by the Jubilee Bridge linking Southport with Main Beach, Queensland, greatly fuelling growth.
