More on RichmondUntil the arrival of European settlers, the Richmond area was inhabited by the Darug people. British settlers arrived in 1789. The area was named by Governor Arthur Philip in honor of Charles Lennox, the 3rd Duke of Richmond. It was the third oldest European settlement in Australia after Sydney and Parramatta.
Richmond is the first of five towns established by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1811, the others being Windsor, Castlereagh, Wilberforce and Pitt town. By the mid 20th century, the urban sprawl of Sydney as absorbed Richmond as part of the outer Sydney suburban area. Due to its long history, the town has quite a number of historic buildings that have been listed on the Register of the National Estate.
