More on NowraThe indigenous inhabitants of the Nowra area comprised the Wodi-Wodi tribe to the south of the Bomaderry Creek and the Dharawal Aboriginal People to the north of the creek. The earliest European settler in the area was Mary Reibey, who arrived in Australia as a convict but went on to become a successful businesswoman in Sydney. Reibey received a land grant for a site in Nowra in 1824, on the southern side of the Shoalhaven River.
The settlement of Nowra was officially recognized as a town in 1852. Postal services were established to it in 1861. Since then public infrastructure were improved. Many of the historic buildings in town date from this period, including a two-storey sandstone house built in 1866 that is today on the Register of the national Estate.
Today Nowra is a popular destination for fishing. It is also the site of the annual Australian National wakeboarding championships.
