More on Leeton

Leeton was founded in the early part of the 20th century. It was named after Charles Alfred Lee, the Minister of Public Works in New South Wales from 1904 to 1910. Much of the town infrastructure dates from 1912, among them its landmark water tower and the Leeton Post Office. Plots of land were sold to settlers the following year.

Willimbong Shire, covering the Leeton area, was established on 1 January 1928. It was renamed Leeton Shire in 1946. Over the decades it evolved into the main hub for the surrounding farming region. A number of agriculture-related industries developed here, among them canning and meat processing. The town is also home to SunRice, the world's fifth largest ricefood exporter.
